Written by subject field experts

Used field-specific language

Provide extensive citations

Peer Review
  • Formal review process

    • Other field experts review potential articles

    • They decide if the journal should publish those articles

  • Provides an extra layer of quality control for journals

  • Often required by professors

BEWARE!  Not all journals peer review the articles they publish!

 

Use a Journal Article if you are: 
  • Researching what other scholars have studied

  • Reviewing bibliographies that point to additional research

About topics of general interest

Do not provide citations

Are not peer reviewed

  • Researching popular culture

  • Finding information about current events

  • Locating subject overviews written for the general public

Newspaper Articles

Published daily

About current events and opinions
