EMPOWER - Module 2 - Choosing Your Topic

If your topic is too broad...

 

  1. Identify aspects of it that interest you, like...
  • Time period
  • Geographic region
  • Population
  • Perspective
  • Type of required resources
  1. Then, use your list to form a Just Right topic with focus and direction!

Example:

A student is asked to write a term paper about Education.  He has narrowed his topic to College Education (too broad).  He creates the following list of aspects of College Education that interest him.

  • Education
Time Period
  • Present
Place
  • United States, Rural
Population
  • Elementary, College
Viewpoint
  • Economic
Type of Required Resources
  • Websites, Newspapers, Magazines, Journals 

 

 

Based on the list, the student decided to use the following narrower topic:

What are the current economic issues concerning rural colleges in the United States?
