EMPOWER - Module 2 - Choosing Your Topic

If your topic is too narrow...

 

  1. Identify related issues and topics that will bring in more information, like...
  • Additional time periods
  • Larger geographic regions
  • Broader population
  • Additional viewpoints
  • Related topics the compare or contrast with yours
  1. Then, use your list to form a Just Right topic that will provide enough information for the assignment!

Example:

A student is asked to write a term paper about International Labor Issues.  She has narrowed her topic to Economic Impact of Sweat Shops on Development in South Asia (too narrow).  She creates the following list of related issues and topics that will bring her more information.

  • Labor practices, Imports, Child endangerment, Working conditions

Time Period
  • Present

Place
  • Countries in Asia and South America

Population
  • Workers, Children, Women

Viewpoint
  • Economic, Labor

Compare/Contrast
  • Location
